‘Stones and Stories’ is a fun event for all the family being held at Frome museum to celebrate our amazing local geology and the fascinating stories behind Mendips hidden quarrying history. The event is being organised by the Quarry Faces community heritage project.
Quarry Faces is a heritage lottery funded community heritage project working to capture, record, and celebrate the quarrying heritage of the Mendip Hills. Since March the Quarry Faces team have staged their largest exhibition to date at Frome Museum and already more photographs have been added to a remarkable collection dating back to the mid 19th century, including photos from long closed Hapsford and Vallis Vale quarries.
However the project is still keen to hear from anyone who may photos or memories. Robin Thornes, project coordinator is appealing for more information to help piece together the long and intriguing histories of these many quarries.
‘At the event we will have a scanner available so photographs can be immediately copied. We also welcome people to share any memories or stories, both retired workers, or relatives and others in the community who have memories of the quarries,’ explained Robin.
There will also be activities for children.
‘Did you know there are eight different types of rock on the Mendip including volcanic basalt quarried at Stoke St Michael and carboniferious limestone, with Forest marble found near Frome,’ explained Ruth Worsley the project’s education coordinator. ‘ We are delighted to have Ed Bailey, Aggregate Industries Geologist, who will be on hand with rock display and identification table. Please bring along any mystery rocks and fossils you may have. Stephen Thomas, Quarry Faces project volunteer and enthusiastic rock and fossil collector from Nunney will be bringing his extraordinary display of locally found fossils.’ Ruth added.
‘Stones and Stories’, is on Saturday 26 April and is a drop in event, from 12 until 4.00 pm with free admission.
The exhibition runs at Frome Museum until to 17 May 2014.
